Road trip tips
As a family-oriented towing company in Bakersfield CA, we, ourselves have always looked forward to family vacations: sun, sand, and ... someone's suitcase falling off the top of the station wagon. Read below for safety tips when going on a road trip. We hope you find this helpful!
In this section, we're going to teach you how to prepare your car for a trip – everything from packing a car to doing preventive car maintenance – so that you can save the excitement for your destination.
When you start financially planning for a vacation, be sure to include a line item in there (above cute clothes and great books) for pretrip car maintenance and possibly membership in an auto club to help keep you safe on the road.
Pretrip Maintenance
Car Checkup
The most common roadside problems are flat tires, broken belts, over-heating, and running out of fuel, all of which are easily preventable. We've divided this pretrip maintenance into two checklists – one for your mechanic and one for you.
DIFM
Mechanic's Checklist (1 to 2 Weeks Prior)
Don't wait until the last minute to get a checkup because mechanics get very busy during the holidays and summertime, and you may not get an appointment. Another important reason to do this ahead of time is that you might need a replacement part that has to be ordered and will take" awhile to arrive, Therefore, schedule an appointment at least I to 2 weeks before your trip for the following items:DIY
- All belts and radiator hoses
- Air and oil filters (or you can do these yourself)
- Brakes
- Battery
- Exhaust system
- Radiator
Here are some pretrip maintenance projects that you can easily do yourself.Roof Luggage Carrier
- Clean all windshield wiper blades, check them for wear, and replace if necessary.
- Test exterior and interior lights, including turn signals.
- Check all tires, including the spare, for air pressure, uneven wear, bulges, and tread. Replace if necessary.
- Check all fluids and replenish, if necessary.
- Change engine filters (air and oil).
- Check that all seat belts are visible and not underneath a seat.
- Locate all items needed for changing a flat (see "Flat Tire," page 132).
- Check all items in your emergency car kit.
- Check mirrors and windshields for cracks and have replaced, if necessary.
When we grew up, there was no such thing as a luggage carrier. You loaded the suitcases on top of the station wagon, threw a tarp over them, tied it all down, and said a Hail Mary that it would stay put. Luggage carriers offer a great solution to overcrowding the inside of your vehicle, as well as transporting items safely. Any items that are not properly secured can be lethal projectiles if you have to make a fast stop, or if you're in a car crash. It's estimated that 3,000 car crashes occur each year from items falling off of vehicles onto roads.
Types of Carriers
Typically, there are two reasons why women hesitate buying a luggage carrier: (1) the cost; and (2) they don't think they can install it themselves. Carriers range in price from under $100 and up – way up – so if you can't afford to buy one, borrow one from a friend. Or; since it typically only gets used once or twice a year; you may want to share the cost and the carrier. With regard to reason number two, we've installed a few carriers by ourselves and together – and if we can do it, you can, too.
Purchasing a Roof Luggage Carrier
There are two types of luggage carriers – a cargo box and a cargo bag. A cargo box comes in two distinctly different styles. One you may know as a "turtle" (or as the industry comically refers to it, a "hamburger box"), because of its shape and opening. The other type of cargo box is long and sleek, and therefore much more aerodynamic than the turtle. A cargo bag is typically square in shape and is made of waterproof material.
You can purchase luggage carriers at some hardware stores, but for the best selection, go to a bicycle or ski shop. Before you go shopping, you first need to see if your car has a roof rack with crossbars.
Crossbars
If your car has a roof rack, it may not have crossbars. Crossbars run across the width of the roof and attach to the roof rack. Their job is to keep the luggage carrier from scratching the paint of the roof, as well as to provide a more secure foundation for the luggage carrier.
If your roof rack doesn't have crossbars, you can purchase them at a bicycle or ski shop and install them yourself. If your car did not come with a factory-installed roof rack you can purchase one through a car dealership or at a bicycle or ski shop – just make sure that you buy one with crossbars. It's best to have the new roof rack professionally installed.
Note: Crossbars come in stationary and adjustable models. For the following instructions, we used stationary crossbars.
Installing a Cargo Bag
There are two ways you can install a cargo bag – prefilled or empty. It all depends on if you have a friend to help, and how heavy the bag will be when full. We prefer to prefill it when it's on the ground because you can get so much more in it. Of course, if you're putting really heavy objects inside, then it's best to fill the cargo bag after it is on top of the car.
There may be two ways to install it, but there's only one way to remove it – and that's with the cargo bag empty. Also, never leave an empty cargo bag on top of the car. If you're not using it, take it down and store it in its tote bag.
Before you begin, be sure to read the manufacturer's instructions.
Place the cargo bag on top of the roof rack and position it so that the zippered opening is at the rear of the car and the bag is centered.
This is where you're going to need to either open a front or back door and step up onto the doorframe, or use a stepladder to reach the roof. Open up the zipper and gently lay the flap onto the roof Fill the cargo bag, being careful to evenly distribute the contents and to not overload (follow the guidelines from both the car and the cargo bag's manufacturer regarding weight limitations). Zip the bag completely shut. Loosely fasten the belts to the front and rear crossbars, center the cargo bag, and then, once that's done, go back and tighten each one. Now tighten the side belts to compress the contents of the bag.
Installing a Cargo Box
Note: These instructions are based on installing an aerodynamically shaped cargo box.
If you are going to install a cargo box yourself, the aerodynamic style is much easier to lift than the hamburger style.
Before you begin, be sure to read the manufacturer's instructions.
To protect the car's paint, place the large towel over the door and onto the roof rack. Open the back door and tuck one of the top corners of the towel inside the door and then close the door to keep the towel from slipping.
Before installing the cargo box, empty it of any contents, excluding the mounting hardware. Lock both sides with the key.
If you're doing this with a helpful friend, each grab an end of the cargo box and place it on top of the roof rack with the nose facing the front.
If you're doing this yourself lean the cargo box against the door that's covered with the towel. Grabbing from the bottom, push it up until it's on top of the roof rack with the nose facing the front.
Adjust the cargo box so that its mounting slots are positioned correctly over the crossbars. Remove the towel.
This is where you will probably need to either open a front or back door and step up onto the doorframe, or use a stepladder to reach the roof. Use the key to unlock one side of the cargo box and lift it open. Reach inside and pull out I of the hardware mounting sets (there will be 4). Place it over the holes so that it will straddle the crossbar Insert the U-bolt from underneath so that it goes directly into the holes and into the mounting hardware. Make sure that the U-bolt is in completely before locking the interior lever and safety lever into place. Repeat this process on the other mounting set on the same side. When completed, lock it. Then repeat the entire process on the other side.
Note: It may seem like such a hassle to remove the cargo box once it's been installed that you may decide you're just going to leave it there. But having a cargo box installed on top of your car will cause you to use 1 to 2 gallons per mile of gas more than without it. With gas prices today, you can't afford not to take it off!"
